League Rules

Kent Individual Chess League 2026/27

1. General

  1. The Kent Individual Chess League is a 9-round Swiss tournament organised by Dartford Junior Chess Club.
  2. The tournament is open to all players. No minimum rating is required.
  3. All play shall be governed by the FIDE Laws of Chess unless otherwise stated in these rules.
  4. The Tournament Director's decisions on all matters are final.

2. Eligibility

  1. Players must have an ECF membership (Bronze or above) to participate. Games will be ECF rated.
  2. Players without an ECF membership may enter but must join the ECF before their first game.
  3. The entry fee of £45 covers all 9 rounds and must be paid before Round 1.

3. Format

  1. The tournament is a 9-round Swiss system, with one round played per month.
  2. Pairings will be generated using standard Swiss pairing software.
  3. All players compete in a single Open section (all ratings welcome).
  4. As entries grow, the tournament may be split into rating-based sections in future seasons.

4. Time Control

  1. The time control is 60 minutes per player plus 30 seconds increment per move from move 1.
  2. Clocks will be provided. Players may use their own digital clocks with the agreement of the Tournament Director.
  3. With a 30-second increment, players must continue to record their moves regardless of remaining time on the clock.

5. Schedule & Venue

  1. Rounds are played on the last Wednesday of each month, September 2026 to May 2027.
  2. Games start at 7:15pm sharp. Clocks will be started at the scheduled time regardless of whether a player is present.
  3. The venue is The Mick Jagger Centre, Shepherds Lane, Dartford, DA1 2JZ.
  4. The venue must be vacated by 10:00pm. Games not completed by this time will be subject to Rule 8.

6. Byes & Absences

  1. Half-point byes are available with at least 7 days advance notice to the Tournament Director. A maximum of 2 half-point byes per player is allowed.
  2. A player who fails to appear without prior notice will receive a zero-point bye (default loss).
  3. 30 minutes grace will be allowed for a late-arriving player. If at the end of this time the player has not arrived, the game will be forfeited.

7. Conduct & Equipment

  1. Players are expected to behave in a sporting manner at all times.
  2. Mobile phones and electronic devices must be switched off and placed in a bag or left outside the playing area. A player whose device makes a sound during their game will forfeit that game.
  3. Players must maintain silence in the playing area. Analysis of ongoing games is strictly prohibited.
  4. Players should not leave the playing area without permission from the Tournament Director.

8. Unfinished Games

  1. If a game is not completed by the venue closing time (10:00pm), the players may agree a result on the night.
  2. If no agreement is reached, the players have 48 hours to agree a result by mutual consent.
  3. If still unresolved, the game will be adjudicated by the Tournament Director or an appointed arbiter. The decision of the adjudicator is final.

9. Scoring & Tiebreaks

  1. A win scores 1 point, a draw scores ½ point, a loss scores 0.
  2. Final standings are determined by total points scored.
  3. In the event of a tie, the following tiebreak methods will be applied in order:
    1. Buchholz (sum of opponents' scores)
    2. Sonneborn-Berger
    3. Direct encounter
    4. Number of wins

10. Prizes

  1. Prize fund is proportional to the number of entries.
  2. In each section:
    • 1st Place: 5 × entry fee + trophy
    • 2nd Place: 3 × entry fee
    • 3rd Place: 1 × entry fee
    • Rating Prize: 1 × entry fee (best performance by a player rated more than 200 points below the section average)
  3. Prizes are not cumulative. A player may only receive one prize.

11. Disputes & Appeals

  1. Any dispute arising during a game should be reported to the Tournament Director immediately.
  2. The Tournament Director will make a ruling based on the FIDE Laws of Chess and these tournament rules.
  3. The Tournament Director's decision is final.

12. Amendments

  1. These rules may be amended by the Tournament Director with reasonable notice given to all participants.
  2. Any changes will be communicated via email to registered players.
