GM Daniel Fernandez Simultaneous Exhibition

On Thursday 8th February 2024, Dartford Junior Chess Club welcomed English Grandmaster Daniel Fernandez for a simultaneous exhibition against our junior members — and what an evening it was.

About GM Daniel Fernandez

Daniel Fernandez earned his Grandmaster title in 2017 at just 22 years old. A former British Under-18 and Under-21 champion, Daniel represented Singapore at two Chess Olympiads before returning to England. With a FIDE rating above 2500 and several published books to his name, he brought serious Grandmaster credentials to our club night.

The Simultaneous

Daniel took on all comers, moving between boards with calm precision. Our juniors were fully focused — some playing their best chess of the season, knowing that opportunities like this don't come along every week. The playing hall was quiet and intense as the games unfolded.

Several of our stronger juniors put up determined resistance, and a few positions gave Daniel genuine pause for thought. For the younger members, simply experiencing the pace and confidence of a Grandmaster in action was a lesson in itself.

A Signed Book for the Coach

To cap off a memorable evening, our head coach Miro received a signed copy of Daniel's book — a generous gesture and a fitting reminder of the visit. It now holds pride of place in the club's growing chess library.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Events like this are at the heart of what we do at Dartford Junior Chess Club. Giving young players the chance to face titled players, see how they think, and test themselves against the best is invaluable for their development. A huge thank you to Daniel for making the trip and giving our members an evening they won't forget.
